Mushroom hunting in Álava

From the hills around Vitoria to the Rioja Alavesa: beech, Portuguese oak and holm oak woods between the Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. We follow 133 zones of about five kilometres in Álava, each with its own forecast for the next fifteen days. Today it is above all the black trumpets (5 zones) and the saffron milk caps (4 zones) waking up.

From its lowest to its highest it runs between 207 and 1,321 m; half of it below 641 m. The land is split like this: farmland (22%), grassland (22%) and beech (18%). And not all at the same height: the black trumpets (301–1,021 m), the saffron milk caps (301–961 m), the bronze boletes (301–998 m) and the chanterelles (301–1,009 m).

Which mushrooms are out now in Guipúzcoa

The beech woods of Aralar and Aizkorri, generous rain and a love of mushrooms that fills the hills and the gastronomic societies in autumn. In Guipúzcoa we watch 88 zones one by one, with the forest, the rain and the soil of each. Today it is mostly the black trumpets (19 zones) and the chanterelles (4 zones) that are stirring.

Here the land runs from sea level up to 1,169 m, and half of it lies below 400 m. What covers most ground: pedunculate oak (25%), beech (24%) and grassland (20%). Each has its own height here: the black trumpets (185–760 m), the chanterelles (167–760 m), the Caesar's mushrooms (167–675 m) and the bronze boletes (176–760 m).

Mushroom season in Vizcaya

Pine woods, the beech forests of Gorbea and the tradition of the perretxiko, which fills the markets in spring. Vizcaya adds up to 102 zones on the map, each with its own fifteen-day forecast. What is stirring most today: the black trumpets (20 zones) and the saffron milk caps (4 zones).

The ground runs from sea level up to 1,111 m, with half of it below 257 m. By area, it is shared out like this: pedunculate oak (40%), grassland (21%) and beech (9%). And not all at the same height: the black trumpets (152–595 m), the saffron milk caps (166–563 m), the Caesar's mushrooms (104–568 m) and the chanterelles (104–569 m).
